What factors do clinicians, coaches and athletes perceive are associated with recovery from low back pain in elite athletes? A concept mapping study
Key Points
- The purpose of this mixed-method concept mapping study was to determine the factors clinicians, coaches, and athletes believe are associated with recovery from low back pain (LBP).
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
An average of about two in five athletes are experiencing low back pain (LBP) at any point in time (1). In addition, a previous experience of LBP increases the risk of a future one (2), which points to the importance of a full recovery. While risk factors for LBP in athletes are well documented (1), the factors associated with recovery are not.
The purpose of this concept mapping study was to determine the factors clinicians, coaches, and athletes believe are associated with recovery from LBP.
Participants rated psychosocial factors as more important on average than biological factors, with relationships, communication, and athlete psychology perceived as most important.
METHODS
For this mixed-method concept mapping study, 56 participants brainstormed statements about the factors associated with recovery of elite athletes from LBP. The participants were comprised of physiotherapists and physicians (75%), coaches (15%), and elite athletes with a history of LBP
