Tampa scale of kinesiophobia may underestimate task-specific fear of movement in people with and without low back pain
Key Points
- The Tampa scale of kinesiophobia (TSK-11) is a common measure of task related fear.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
Since the fear avoidance model was first conceptualized by Vlayean (1) in the early 2000’s, the importance of avoidant behaviors associated with low back pain (LBP) due to fear has grown in awareness. Numerical instruments such as the fear avoidance belief questionnaire and the Tampa scale of kinesiophobia (TSK-11) have been used to try to quantify this phenomenon. The validity of such measures, or the question of does the measure accurately measure the intended target, has been challenged in recent times (2).
Therefore, this study aimed to compare written, image-based, and video-based questionnaires as tools for measuring LBP- related fear of movement (FoM). The study hypothesised that the greatest fear response would be elicited through the video-based method, with the lowest fear elicited by the written method.
To truly understand task specific fear, a good clinical conversation is required that specifically addresses the question of avoidant behaviours, why these may happen and allows the patient to elaborate on these emotions.
METHODS
- This paper was a cross sectional design that utilized an online survey and participants were recruited through social media channels.
