BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE

Over the past year, artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Bard have skyrocketed in popularity. These chatbots, which are based on large language models, work by predicting the most likely next word in a sequence. This process results in text outputs that are all but indistinguishable from human writing (1). In addition to writing, the AI chatbots have accomplished other impressive feats, like passing the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), for example (2).

The AI chatbots’ prowess across a wide range of applications has raised questions and controversies in the musculoskeletal (MSK) rehabilitation community. The authors of this viewpoint offered their perspective on the pros and cons of integrating AI chatbots into rehabilitation education, clinical practice, and research. This review will focus on the clinical practice applications.
