BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
This literature review and concept proposal paper was written by allied health academic staff at the University of Genoa, Italy. The main purpose was to outline the importance of a wider understanding of the action mechanisms of therapeutic touch. It was proposed that manual therapy be considered as a specific form of touch, in which there are three aspects of touch response: 1. Analgesic Modulation, 2. Affective Response, and 3. Somatoperceptual Reorganization.
